Neurodermatitis | What really helps irritated skin?

Neirodermīts | Kas patiešām palīdz kairinātai ādai?

Dry, red skin, constant itching and the feeling that you'll never find a real solution - anyone who suffers from atopic dermatitis knows how stressful this chronic skin condition can be. Even everyday things like spicy food, clothing, heat or the wrong skin cream can trigger sudden flare-ups.

Many people already consciously pay attention to a healthy diet, stress management, and sleep quality, but when it comes to skin care, there is often a lot of confusion: what is good for the skin? What should be avoided? Which products really provide relief?

What exactly is atopic dermatitis?

Neurodermatitis - also known as atopic eczema - is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that occurs in flare-ups. It is characterized by extremely dry, scaly and often red patches of skin , which may be accompanied by a burning sensation, discharge or cracking of the skin. The inner elbows, backs of the knees, face and neck are particularly susceptible. The most noticeable and distressing symptom is itching - it can be so intense that it is difficult to sleep or concentrate. The skin is often sore, inflamed and constantly very sensitive.

Why does traditional care often not help?

What many people don't realize: body creams, lotions or cleansers often contain ingredients that can further aggravate already damaged skin. The most common irritants are fragrances - both synthetic and natural. Silicones and mineral oils form an occlusive film on the skin, but while they provide a temporary feeling of protection, they do not improve skin health. Preservatives and alcohol can also further dry out the skin or increase irritation. Therefore, it is important for people with atopic dermatitis to choose a skin care product that does not contain such additives - gentle, non-irritating and adapted to the specific needs of sensitive skin.

Gentle care from nature

Natural cosmetics can be a gentle alternative - provided that they are carefully selected. Formulations that do not contain alcohol, fragrances and essential oils are particularly useful. Active ingredients of plant origin, such as shea butter, aloe vera, jojoba, olive or sea buckthorn oil, have a soothing effect, promote regeneration and strengthen the skin barrier. This is essential, because only an intact skin barrier protects against external irritants, microbes and moisture loss. Active ingredients such as urea, glycerin and hyaluronic acid are also valuable, as they bind moisture and can thus reduce symptoms such as cracking, itching and peeling of the skin.

Less is more – even in your skincare routine

Skin care for atopic dermatitis should be as minimalist as possible:

  • For cleansing, we recommend using a soap-free product with a neutral pH, which helps restore the skin's sebum layer and does not dry out the skin;
  • After a shower or bath, it's best to gently pat your skin dry, rather than rubbing it, and apply moisturizer immediately while it's still slightly damp. Whether it's a serum, cream, or oil, it's important that the products are compatible and hypoallergenic.

The skin microbiome, i.e. its natural bacterial flora, also plays a major role in atopic dermatitis. It protects the skin, supports its regeneration, and can be strengthened with gentle skin care products. Constantly trying new products can quickly upset the balance of the microbiome - it's better to stick to a few proven products and monitor your skin closely.

Tip: peclavus® diabetic series

One of the product lines that is particularly suitable for sensitive skin prone to atopic dermatitis is the peclavus diabetic series. Originally developed for the needs of diabetic skin, it offers an especially gentle care formula without skin-irritating additives . The products are based on plant-based ingredients and long-lasting hydration without the use of preservatives or fragrances. Many products in this line also have the dermatest quality seal - a quality mark that is an important landmark, especially for people with sensitive skin.

What does the dermatest seal mean?

The Dermatest seal stands for proven skin compatibility. It confirms that the tested products are dermatologically safe and do not pose any unnecessary risks. This is especially important for people with atopic dermatitis or very sensitive skin - after all, their skin often reacts to even the slightest stressors. A product with the Dermatest seal gives you confidence and helps you navigate the jungle of skin care products.

Improvements will be achieved with patience, conscientiousness, and proper care.

Natural cosmetics are not a miracle cure, but they can be an important helper on the way to healthier skin. Those who treat their skin gently, understand its needs and rely on gentle, specially formulated products create the best conditions for skin well-being. It is important to give yourself and your skin time, observe changes and seek professional advice if necessary. Because sometimes less really is more - especially when it comes to caring for sensitive skin.
